Applied Sociology

Applied sociology is the use of sociological research, theory, and methods to understand and solve real problems. It is the analysis side of the work: making sense of what is actually happening inside an organization, a program, or a community, and turning that understanding into clear, usable direction.

In practice that looks like needs assessment, program and curriculum design, evaluation, and strategy. The questions are practical. Who is being served, and who is being missed? Is a program doing what it claims? What is driving the pattern a leader keeps running into? The output is evidence and recommendations a client can act on, grounded in data rather than assumption.

Applied and clinical sociology work as a pair, which is why they are so often named together. Applied sociology supplies the analysis; clinical sociology carries out the change. My work with individuals, couples, and organizations draws on both.
